As the name says, Vervain comes from the Verbena family. These kinds of plants we believed to be wonder plants during ancient times. In Egypt the plant was dedicated to the goddess of birth, in ancient Rome to the goddess of love. The Romans used to brew healing and love potions, whereas during medieval times the abbess Hildegard von Bingen used Verbena to treat infections and as throat compress for amygdalitis. Today, however, Vervain is mainly valued for its relaxing and de-stressing effects.
The lemon scented Vervain is the south American sister of the European verbena. It was only introduced to Europe in the 18th century and is part of many tea blends. Moreover the Lemon Vervain can be found in many infant and lactation teas.
